I Did Not Change A Single Habit And My Electricity Bill Dropped 23 Percent. It Was Not The Chargers. It Was Never The Chargers. It Was A Freezer And A Soundbar. My Wife Said Turn The Lights Off. The Meter Said It Was Something Else Entirely.

For two years my wife and I had the same argument. The bill went up, she said turn the lights off, I said the lights are LEDs, she said then what is it, and I did not know.

That was the honest answer. I did not know. Nobody does. The bill is one number and the house is forty things.

In June I bought a power strip that meters each socket, with two metered plugs in the same kit. I did not change a single habit for the first month. I just moved the strip around and looked.

Then I changed two things, and the next bill was 23 percent lower. Here is what they were.

Then I changed two things, and the next bill was 23 percent lower. Here is what they were.

Month one: looking

The strip has four sockets and each one shows up in the app as its own line, in watts right now and kilowatt-hours over the month. I put it on the media wall first because that is where the argument usually ended up.

The television drew 0.4 watts off. Fine. The soundbar drew 14 watts off. Not fine. The set-top box drew 11. Between them, with nothing playing, the wall was pulling 26 watts all night, every night.

26 W
The media wall with everything off. About 66 euros a year at my tariff, which is 0.29 EUR a kilowatt-hour.
0.7 W
Every phone charger in the house, together, with nothing on them. About 1.80 a year. My wife has stopped unplugging them.
1.7 kWh
What the chest freezer in the cellar used per day. About 180 euros a year. It is fourteen years old.

Fourteen years. Nobody had ever put a meter on it. Why would you? It is a freezer. It hums.

Month two: two changes

The first change took two minutes. In the app I told the strip to switch off outlets one to three between midnight and seven. The television keeps its outlet because it has to update. The wall now draws about a watt overnight instead of twenty-six.

The second change cost money. We replaced the freezer. The new one is smaller, which we should have done years ago anyway, and it draws about 0.5 kilowatt-hours a day. That is about 127 euros a year less than the old one, so it pays for itself in about three years. One of the two plugs from the kit is on it now, so I know that number rather than believe it.

JuneBill 118 EUR. Strip on the media wall.
JulyStrip in the office, then kitchen, then cellar. Freezer found.
AugustWall on a schedule. Freezer replaced on the 9th.
SeptemberBill 91 EUR. Same weather, same people, same habits.

Two months of looking, two changes, and a bill 27 euros lower. The freezer is most of it.

The strip and the two plugs I ended up with, as a kit

The two plugs, since you will ask

One stayed on the new freezer. The other went on the dehumidifier in the cellar, which turned out to run far more than we thought, so it is now on a schedule. That means the strip can stay on the media wall while the two things on their own keep their own meters. Nothing was wired and nobody had to come round.

What two months of looking was worth

My house, my tariff
Media wall overnight, now on a scheduleabout 18 EUR a year
Old freezer replaced, measured before and afterabout 127 EUR a year
The bill, September against June27 EUR a month lower
The freezer cost 380 euros and pays back in about three years. The strip and the two plugs were 74.90 together. Be straight about that one: the overnight schedule is about 18 euros a year, so on that change alone the kit takes four years. The freezer is what moved the bill. The kit is what found the freezer. Nothing in this table required anyone to change a habit.

✓You see what each socket costs, in euros, on your phone. The strip meters each of its four outlets separately. Not the house. The thing.
✓Standby dies on a schedule. Media wall off at midnight, on at seven. The strip does it, you do nothing.
✓Two more meters for the suspects. One plug on the old freezer, one on the tumble dryer or the heater. Each shows what that one appliance costs over the month.

Four stars and below are left in. The most common small complaint about the plugs is the status light, which cannot be switched off on its own. The most common one about the strip is a small reading on an outlet that is off, which is the strip's own electronics.

What people ask me

Was it really 23 percent?
118 down to 91. Same two people, same appliances apart from the freezer, September against June. Some of that is the weather, and I have said so to everyone who asks. Most of it is the freezer.
Did you need the two plugs?
Not to find the two things. The strip found both. The plugs mean the strip can stay on the media wall while the freezer and the dehumidifier each keep their own meter, and I would not go back to moving one strip around.
